The film premiered at the Sydney Film Festival on the 19 June 1979 and then the following night was screened on television across Australia. It took three weeks to shoot the picture. Peter Weir based the movie on an incident that happened to two friends of his about a chatty, incompetent and mysterious plumber who made a number of call-outs to the couple at their London home.
