The great-granddaughter of poet Rabindranath Tagore, she is also the wife of His Highness Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Nawab of Pataudi, with whom she has three children, actor Saif Ali Khan born 16 August 1970, Saba and Soha Ali Khan, born 4 October 1978.

Sharmila Tagore is a Bengali actress, who has now achieved success in Hindi films produced by Bollywood. Sharmila Tagore's ancestor was the noted Rabindranath Tagore. Sharmila married the famous Indian cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan, and since then her marriage has been intact. Sharmila has one son and two daughters. Her son is Bollywood actor, Saif Ali Khan, and the daughters are Saba and Soha. Daughter Soha has recently entered Bollywood too. Sharmila is the grandmother of two children, a girl Sara Ali Khan, and a boy Ibrahim Ali Khan. Her daughter-in-law is noted Bollywood actress, Amrita Singh. However, recently both Saif and Amrita have separated, with Sharmila's grandchildren remaining with their mother, Amrita, in India.
