Ken was born in Dallas, Texas and grew up in San Antonio, Texas. After high school graduation he attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas on a music scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree. A trombonist, he began playing professionally in college and made his living as a jazz musician for a number of years after graduation.
