George Grizzard Biography

Mini Biography
Born in North Carolina but raised in Washington D.C., renown stage actor George Grizzard initially was headed for a radio broadcasting career when the 'acting bug' bit. He apprenticed in stock plays and eventually made it to Broadway where he earned major kudos for "The Desperate Hours" (1955), his Broadway debut, "The Disenchanted" (1958), for which he was nominated for a Tony award, "Big Fish, Little Fish" (1961), for which he won the Outer Critic's Circle award, "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1962), and, most recently, "A Delicate Balance" (1996) wherein he finally won the Tony.

Films beckoned in the 60s with an important role as a crafty senator in Advise & Consent (1962), but Grizzard found more durable work coming his way on TV playing various politicians (presidents, governors, mayors, etc.), notably his Emmy-nominated portrayal as John Adams in "The Adams Chronicles" (1976) (mini). An intelligent, cerebral performer for over five decades, George Grizzard was a co-founder of the APA repertory company in New York.
