Special Trivia

The "volcanic ash" was really fine newspaper shavings. Most of the film's exteriors were shot in Wallace, Idaho, and Dante's Peak and surrounding scenery were then digitally added. A great many special effects in the movie were practical special effects, using real-world models or full-size properties and vehicles. All crater scenes were shot at Mt St Helens
