When someone tries to murder watchmaker Eddy Kay, the incident triggers a barrage of nightmares and flashbacks into a past that isn't his own. Fearing for his sanity, Eddy contacts psychiatrist Dr. Anna Nolmar for help. Anna thinks he's hallucinating until another attack proves the dangers are all too real. The two of them go on the run, trying to discover the truth about Eddie's past and true identity before it kills them.
The Drug Squad officer was originally to be called MacKenzie but was renamed Stringer at a late stage because there was a real-life MacKenzie at Scotland Yard. Although Tim Sewell is credited with writing the screenplay from an original story by director Henry Cole, shortly before the start of principal photography, Cole himself rewrote some sections of the script to bring out the British upper-class eccentricity which he felt was missing.
