Married to a bigot, the life of a woman is turned upside down when her brother-in-law shows up at an Irish-American family gathering with his black fiancée, and her sister-in-law shows up with a disabled Sephardi Jew.
The character of Imogene the cow is borrowed directly from the 1902 stage musical based on the book. She does not appear in the original book. In the stage version, she was used as a replacement for Toto the dog. Many of the costumes and much of the make-up in this film resemble those used in the 1902 Broadway musical "The Wizard of Oz".
