This film is on the American Humane Association's list of "unacceptable" films. Animal action was not monitored by the AHA. One horse drowned, another was crippled by tripwires, and several others were injured in a stampede sequence. Marlon Brando's performance was mostly improvised. Arthur Penn eventually gave up on him and decided to just let him act whatever way he wanted.
