James Mason replaced Paul Scofield who was injured when his leg was broken after an accident with a horse-drawn carriage during filming. This is the last film James Mason shot before his death. Nigel Havers was originally cast as Lionel Stephens but the film was delayed after some of the cast were injured in a riding accident.
