Originally meant to be the pilot for a hopeful new TV series, meant to follow the adventures of a family of aliens trapped on Earth, and the two Earthlings they live with. The film's title was changed from "The Idiot" due to concerns it might be perceived as a comedy. Although the novel it was based on was set in Russia, the film is set in contemporary Brighton.
