This film is an adaptation of the story of real life killers William Burke and William Hare who, around 1827 in Edinburg, did provide more than a dozen "fresh" corpses to the anatomist Doctor Knox. This film was remade in 1985 by Freddie Francis as "The Doctor and the Devils" in which names of the characters was changed.
