Tom grew up in Buffalo, New York and first got interested in theater while in the Army, where he was a member of a Special Services troop. Later he taught acting at the Studio ARENA Theatre School in Buffalo while appearing in numerous productions there. He appeared on Broadway at the Cort Theatre in The Magic Show as Goldfarb.
