Byrd started his career by playing comic strip detective, Dick Tracy, in several movie serials. He was successful in putting the role behind him and becoming a successful character actor. A serious auto accident slowed down his career in the late 1940s, and he returned to the role of Tracy for two films and a TV series. By: Ray Hamel
