Mini Biography
Son of the governor of Illinois, Wallace lived in Indianapolis as a young boy. He served in the Mexican War, and then became a lawyer and was elected to the state senate. He served the Federal government during the Civil War, reaching the rank of major general; his main success was turning back Jubal Early's raid on Washington D.C. in 1864. After the Civil War, Wallace was appointed governor of New Mexico Territory and later minister to Turkey. He wrote a great deal, although he is most famous for _Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ_, and was a successful lecturer.
