Joe Miale began classical training in visual arts when he was eight years old. He graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts film and television program in 2000. He worked for film distribution company Stratosphere Entertainment, filmed heart surgery videos in the operating room, and was hired to direct a video for the university, while he was still a student.
