Gilbert Ralston was born in 1912 in New Castle, County Down, Ireland. He began his writing career as a reporter for the Northern Whig newspaper, and later joined his father's seed sale business in Ireland. Under the name Stephen Gilbert he authored many science and animal anatomy books, and in 1969 wrote 'Ratman's Notebooks' his first and only fiction novel.
