He is a noted African American film historian and author. The most notable of his works are Brown Sugar: Eighty Years of America's Black Female Superstars, which he turned into a four-part documentary for PBS; and Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, & Bucks, a study of black images in American film.
